Ingredients

The cake

  • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons orange zest
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4-5 drops orange food coloring gel
  • cup milk
  • 3 large egg whites
  • ¼ cup orange juice

The buttercream frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 vanilla bean scraped OR 2 teaspoons vanilla paste
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream

The decoration

  • 1 drop orange food coloring gel
  • 1 drop green food coloring gel

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare the baking pans.
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  3. In a mixer, combine the sugar and orange zest, then add butter and vanilla, beating until fluffy.
  4. Mix the milk, egg whites, and orange juice in a measuring cup.
  5. Alternate adding the dry and wet ingredients to the mixer until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake until a skewer comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool before frosting.
  8. Beat the butter for the frosting until smooth, then add powdered sugar, salt, vanilla, and cream.
  9. Color portions of the frosting for decoration and pipe onto the cooled cake.
