Ingredients

The cake

  • 2 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup salted butter, softened
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 15-ounce can pumpkin
  • 1 ½ cups semisweet chocolate chips

The streusel

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch salt
  • ½ cup salted butter, cut into pieces
  • ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup toasted pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13-inch metal baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cream the butter, applesauce, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla, then add the pumpkin and mix until combined.
  5. Stir in the dry ingredients and fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
  7. For the streusel, mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
  8. Add the butter and mix until clumpy, then sprinkle over the batter along with additional chocolate chips and pecans.
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  10. Cool completely before serving.
