Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and coat three 8-inch pans with nonstick spray.
- In a stand mixer, beat the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
- Add the cocoa, salt, baking soda, and eggs one at a time, mixing well.
- Alternate adding the cake flour and buttermilk in thirds, mixing until combined.
- Mix in the vanilla extract and red icing color.
- Divide the batter among the three pans and bake for 25 minutes.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans before transferring to the freezer for 30 minutes.
- For the frosting, beat all frosting ingredients in a stand mixer until smooth.
- Remove the cakes from the freezer, level the tops, and frost with the cream cheese frosting.
