Ingredients

The bars

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsulphured molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

The frosting

  • ½ cup butter
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • cups powdered sugar
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a 13 by 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a stand mixer, blend the melted butter, brown sugar, and molasses until combined, then mix in the egg and vanilla.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.
  5. Spread the dough evenly in the prepared baking dish and bake for 14 to 17 minutes.
  6. Allow the bars to cool completely on a wire rack.
  7. For the frosting, cream together the butter and cream cheese until smooth, then add powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until fluffy.
  8. Spread the frosting over the cooled bars and cut into squares.
