Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 6 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon active dry or instant yeast
  • 5 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups bread flour

The chocolate filling

  • 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

The espresso icing

  • 3 Tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder
  • cups confectioners’ sugar
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough by whisking warm milk, sugar, and yeast; let it sit until foamy.
  2. Add remaining sugar, butter, eggs, salt, and flour, then mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough until soft and slightly tacky, then let it rise in a greased bowl for 2 hours.
  4. Punch down the dough, roll it out into a rectangle, and prepare the filling by mixing its ingredients.
  5. Spread the filling over the dough, add chocolate, roll it up, and cut into rolls.
  6. Let the rolls rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  7. Preheat the oven and bake the rolls until lightly browned, about 25-28 minutes.
  8. Prepare the icing by whisking cream, espresso powder, sugar, and vanilla, then drizzle over warm rolls.
