Ingredients

Cake Batter

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • teaspoons vanilla extract

Chocolate Buttercream

  • 8 ounces dark chocolate
  • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate
  • cups heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
  • cups unsalted butter, cool, cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Sift together the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
  3. In another bowl, mix melted butter, coffee, and buttermilk for 2 minutes.
  4. Add eggs and vanilla, mixing for an additional 2 minutes.
  5. Combine the wet and dry ingredients until well incorporated.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 35-40 minutes.
  7. Cool the cakes in the pans for 15 minutes, then transfer to racks to cool completely.
  8. For the buttercream, chop the chocolates and set aside.
  9. Heat heavy cream and corn syrup in a saucepan, then pour over the chopped chocolate.
  10. Whisk until smooth and allow to cool to room temperature.
  11. Beat the chocolate mixture and gradually add butter until thick and silky.
  12. Trim the tops of the cooled cake layers, layer with buttercream, and frost the entire cake.
  13. Serve immediately or refrigerate before serving.
