Ingredients

The cake

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk
  • 1 ½ cups hot coffee
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

The frosting

  • 12 ounces butter
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 7 cups confectioner's sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350º F and prepare three 9" round baking pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, hot coffee, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  4. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  5. Once baked, cool the cakes in the pans for 15 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  6. For the frosting, beat softened butter and cream cheese until fluffy, then mix in cocoa powder and vanilla.
  7. Gradually add confectioner's sugar while mixing, then adjust consistency with milk.
  8. Assemble the cake by layering with frosting between each layer and frosting the outside.
  9. Refrigerate the cake for at least one hour before serving.
