Ingredients

The sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream or whipping cream
  • 1 ¾ cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼-½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

The potatoes and ham

  • 2 pounds Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced about ¼-inch thick
  • 2 cups chopped fully cooked ham
  • 4 oz cheddar cheese or parmesan cheese, to sprinkle on top

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a skillet, melt butter and sauté onions, garlic, and thyme until fragrant.
  3. Add cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg to the skillet and bring to a boil, then simmer for about 5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and optionally discard the onions and thyme.
  5. Add sliced potatoes to the cream mixture and simmer until almost tender, about 10-15 minutes.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish, layering with ham and sprinkling cheese on top.
  7. Bake until bubbling and the top is golden brown.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving.
