Sunday Night Gnocchi Bolognese Bake

Ingredients

The sauce

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small sweet onion, diced
  • 2 carrots diced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef or spicy Italian sausage
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced or grated
  • 1 28 ounce can San Marzano tomatoes
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 sprigs fresh oregano

The gnocchi and cheese

  • 16 ounces potato gnocchi
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese, torn
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • fresh basil, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, add onions and carrots, season with salt and pepper, and cook until softened.
  3. Add the ground beef and garlic, cooking until the beef is browned.
  4. Stir in the tomatoes, wine, and milk, then add the bay leaf and oregano, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  5. Stir in the gnocchi and 1/3 cup of water, bring to a boil, and cook for another 5-10 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat, discard the bay leaf and oregano, top with cheese, and bake for 15 minutes until bubbling and melted.
  7. Top with fresh basil before serving.
