Ingredients

The pasta

  • cups small shell pasta

The sauce

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, chopped
  • 5 cups broccoli florets, chopped stems, and leaves
  • ¼ cup toasted pine nuts
  • to taste sea salt
  • to taste freshly ground black pepper
  • lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pasta according to package instructions until al dente, then drain.
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil and sauté the chopped onion until soft.
  3. Add the chopped broccoli stems and cook until tender, then add the florets and leaves with a splash of water or broth.
  4. Cover and allow the broccoli to steam until bright green and tender.
  5. Combine the cooked pasta with the broccoli and stir in most of the sauce, adding more broth if needed.
  6. Season with salt, pepper, and lemon juice as desired, then serve topped with remaining sauce and pine nuts.
