Smoked Bourbon and Salted Caramel Apple Pie

Ingredients

The pie crust

  • 2 pieces refrigerated pie crusts

The filling

  • 5 cups sliced apples
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 dash nutmeg
  • 1 dash allspice
  • 1 dash ginger
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 3 tbsp bourbon
  • 4 tbsp Bourbon Barrel Foods Salted Caramel or Dulce De Leche
  • 1 tsp Maldon smoked sea salt or regular sea salt

The egg wash

  • 1 piece egg
  • 2-3 tbsp water

Instructions

  1. Peel and chop the apples, then mix with bourbon, spices, brown sugar, and butter in a bowl.
  2. Let the pie crusts thaw slightly.
  3. In a pot, combine the apple mixture on medium heat until softened, about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Roll out the pie dough into a pregreased skillet or pie pan.
  5. Add the apple mixture to the pie dough.
  6. Heat the caramel or dulce de leche to soften, then pour over the apple mixture.
  7. Cover with the second pie crust, seal edges, and cut slits for steam to escape.
  8. Prepare an egg wash with egg and water, then coat the pie crust.
  9. Bake at 375°F for about 30 minutes or until the crust is browned and filling is bubbly.
  10. Serve with extra caramel drizzle and optional ice cream.
