Ingredients

The crust

  • 1 cup salted caramel sauce, divided

The filling

  • 10 cups 1/4-inch-thick apple slices (about 8 large apples)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice or ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 Tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
  • optional coarse sugar (for sprinkling on crust)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pie crust according to the recipe instructions.
  2. If using homemade salted caramel, make it now to cool while the dough chills.
  3. In a large bowl, combine apple slices, sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, allspice/cloves, and nutmeg.
  4. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).
  5. Roll out one disc of chilled dough and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.
  6. Fill the crust with the apple mixture and drizzle with ½ cup of salted caramel.
  7. Roll out the second disc of dough and cut into strips to create a lattice top over the filling.
  8. Brush the top crust with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  9. Bake for 25 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for 35–40 minutes until bubbling.
  10. Cool the pie for at least 3 hours before slicing and serving with additional salted caramel.
