Ingredients

The crust

  • ½ recipe homemade pie crust

The filling

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 Tablespoon warm water
  • 5 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

The egg wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon milk

Optional topping

  • to taste homemade salted caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pie crust and chill it for at least 2 hours.
  2. Make the apple filling by mixing cornstarch and warm water, then cooking diced apple pieces with cinnamon and sugar until thick and bubbly.
  3. Roll out the chilled pie dough and cut it into strips.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (191°C).
  5. Core the apples and fill them with the prepared apple filling.
  6. Weave the pie dough strips over the apples to create a lattice crust.
  7. Brush the tops with an egg wash and sprinkle with cinnamon if desired.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the crust is browned and the filling is bubbly.
  9. Drizzle with salted caramel before serving.
