Ingredients

The base

  • cup natural, unsweetened cocoa powder or Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1 ⅓ cups granulated sugar
  • teaspoon salt
  • cup water

The liquid

  • 6 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy, like almond milk)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • to taste none half and half or additional milk (if desired)

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and water.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil while stirring constantly, then simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Stir in the milk and vanilla, heating until warm but not boiling.
  4. Serve immediately or transfer to a slow cooker to keep warm.
