Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 pound frozen white bread dough, thawed

The filling

  • 2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon grated lemon zest
  • a pinch nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons sliced almonds
  • 1 cup blueberries

For serving

  • Confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

  1. Roll and stretch the dough into a 12-inch square on a floured surface.
  2. Combine cream cheese, lemon zest, and nutmeg in a bowl and spread over the dough.
  3. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of sugar and sliced almonds, then add the blueberries and press lightly.
  4. Cut the dough into 16 squares and stack them into 4 stacks of 4 squares each.
  5. Place the stacks on their sides in a buttered loaf pan and separate the layers.
  6. Sprinkle with the remaining sugar and almonds, cover loosely, and let rise for 1 to 2 hours.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake for 40 to 45 minutes until browned.
  8. Let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a plate and cool for another 30 minutes.
  9. Dust with confectioners' sugar before serving.
