Ingredients

The cake

  • 2 ¼ cups cake flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 cup whole milk

The frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 4 ½ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • ¾ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 Tablespoon light corn syrup
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • teaspoon salt
  • optional rainbow sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare a baking pan.
  2. Whisk together the dry ingredients in a bowl.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar together, then add eggs and vanilla.
  4. Mix in the sour cream, then alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk until combined.
  5. Spread the batter in the prepared pan and bake until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let the cake cool in the pan while preparing the frosting.
  7. Beat the butter for the frosting until creamy, then mix in the sugar and cocoa.
  8. Add milk, corn syrup, vanilla, and salt to the frosting and mix until smooth.
  9. Frost the cooled cake and add sprinkles if desired.
