Ingredients

The cake

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ¾ cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

The frosting

  • cups unsalted butter
  • cup nonfat dry milk powder
  • cup heavy cream
  • tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 lb powdered sugar
  • to taste flaky sea salt
  • to taste sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and prepare a baking pan.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients for the cake in a medium bowl.
  3. Combine cocoa powder, oil, and hot water in a large bowl until dissolved, then add eggs, buttermilk, salt, and vanilla.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients until smooth, then pour into the prepared pan.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until done, then cool the cake.
  6. Prepare the frosting by browning butter and mixing with milk powder, then add cream and cool.
  7. Beat the remaining butter, salt, and vanilla, then gradually add powdered sugar and the brown butter mixture until fluffy.
  8. Frost the cooled cake and add optional toppings.
