Soy and Scallion Tofu Bowl

Ingredients

The tofu mixture

  • 1 block firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 Tbsp. toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp. Aleppo-style pepper
  • 3 pieces scallions
  • 3 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. mirin or pure maple syrup
  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter

For serving

  • Cooked white rice
  • more for serving toasted sesame seeds
  • more for serving Aleppo-style pepper

Instructions

  1. Squeeze tofu to expel water and grate it.
  2. Heat oil and garlic in a skillet, cooking until garlic is golden.
  3. Add sesame seeds and Aleppo-style pepper, cooking until fragrant.
  4. Add grated tofu and cook until it begins to crisp.
  5. Stir in scallions, soy sauce, mirin, and butter, cooking until liquid evaporates.
  6. Serve the tofu mixture over rice, topped with sesame seeds and pepper.
