Ingredients

The pudding

  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • cups half and half
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 15 oz can pumpkin
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 16 oz loaf hearty crusty French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

Toppings (optional)

  • ½ cup toasted pecans, chopped
  • to taste salted caramel sauce
  • to taste sweetened whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugars, spices, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs and egg yolks, then stir in the half and half, milk, pumpkin, and vanilla.
  4. Place the bread cubes in a large mixing bowl and pour the milk mixture over them, gently tossing to coat. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
  5. Spoon the mixture into a buttered baking dish.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 to 50 minutes until set.
  7. Let cool for a few minutes, then cut and serve with optional toppings.
