Ingredients

The cake

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup butter
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 ¾ cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon table salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup buttermilk or sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Mini pack Reese’s Pieces for decoration

The frosting

  • cup butter
  • cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 package peanut butter chips (10 ounces)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13 inch pan.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, and cocoa powder, and bring to a boil while stirring frequently.
  3. Once boiling, remove from heat after 1 minute.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Add eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk (or sour cream) to the dry ingredients and beat until blended.
  6. Stir in the cocoa mixture until just combined and pour into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, then allow to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, combine peanut butter chips, milk, and butter in a saucepan and heat until melted, stirring frequently.
  9. Remove from heat and whisk in vanilla and powdered sugar until smooth.
  10. Pour the frosting over the cooled cake and smooth it out, optionally topping with mini Reese’s Pieces.
  11. Allow the cake to cool before serving.
