Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325°F and prepare a 9-inch round cake pan.
- Soak the dates in boiling water for 10-15 minutes.
- Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
- Drain the dates and blend them into a chunky paste.
- In another bowl, beat together oil, applesauce, sugar, and eggs until fluffy.
- Mix in the date paste, milk, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients until combined.
- Fold in the chocolate chips and transfer the batter to the cake pan.
- Bake for 35-50 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean, then cool on a wire rack.
- For the frosting, soak the dates in boiling water for 10-15 minutes.
- Blend the soaked dates until smooth, then mix in cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt.
- Fold in walnuts and coconut, then refrigerate until the cake cools.
- Spread the frosting on the cooled cake and cut into slices.
