Homemade Stovetop Stuffing

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf crusty French or Italian bread
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup finely chopped yellow or white onions
  • 1 cup finely chopped celery
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 ½ teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ¼ teaspoon dried sage

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Cut the bread into ½-inch cubes and toast in the oven for 10-12 minutes until lightly toasted.
  3. While the bread is toasting, heat the broth until very warm.
  4. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat and add the onions, celery, garlic, and salt; cook until tender.
  5. Stir in the poultry seasoning, thyme, and sage, and cook for another minute.
  6. Add the toasted bread cubes and mix well to coat with the butter and vegetable mixture.
  7. Gradually add the warmed broth and stir to moisten the bread evenly.
  8. Cover the pot and let the stuffing sit for about 10 minutes before serving.
