Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a 9 by 9-inch square baking dish with non-stick spray.
- In a bowl, mix together brown sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt for the topping and spread it in the baking dish.
- Toss the apple slices with lemon juice and arrange them over the brown sugar mixture.
- In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cream together butter and granulated sugar until fluffy, then add eggs one at a time and mix in vanilla.
- Gradually mix in the flour mixture and buttermilk, alternating between the two, until fully combined.
- Spread the batter over the apples in the baking dish.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool for 15 minutes, then invert it onto a platter and serve warm.
