Ingredients

Topping

  • ¾ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • tsp salt
  • 2 medium golden delicious apples, peeled, cored and sliced into ½-inch thick wedges
  • 2 tsp lemon juice

Cake

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • cup buttermilk or milk, at room temperature

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a 9 by 9-inch square baking dish with non-stick spray.
  2. In a bowl, mix together brown sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt for the topping and spread it in the baking dish.
  3. Toss the apple slices with lemon juice and arrange them over the brown sugar mixture.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Cream together butter and granulated sugar until fluffy, then add eggs one at a time and mix in vanilla.
  6. Gradually mix in the flour mixture and buttermilk, alternating between the two, until fully combined.
  7. Spread the batter over the apples in the baking dish.
  8. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool for 15 minutes, then invert it onto a platter and serve warm.
