Ingredients

  • 2 cups very thinly sliced apples (3–4 apples)
  • ½ cup salted butter
  • cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cake

  • ½ cup salted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • to taste sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Grease a round 9-inch cake pan generously.
  2. Slice the apples very thinly using a mandoline or a sharp knife.
  3. Melt butter in a medium saucepan, then add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and vanilla. Cook for about 3 minutes until smooth.
  4. Pour the caramel mixture into the greased cake pan and layer the apple slices on top.
  5. Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C).
  6. In a bowl, beat the remaining butter and brown sugar until creamy, then add eggs and milk and mix until incorporated.
  7. Stir in flour, baking powder, and cinnamon, then pour the batter over the caramel and apple layer in the cake pan.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes, then let cool for 10 minutes before inverting onto a plate.
  9. Sprinkle with sea salt and serve, optionally with vanilla ice cream.
