Gochujang-Butter-Braised Tofu

Ingredients

The sauce

  • 3 Tbsp. gochujang (Korean hot pepper paste)
  • 2 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. chicken or vegetable bouillon paste
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. fish sauce
  • 1 cup water

The tofu and vegetables

  • 14 oz. block firm tofu
  • 1 small white or yellow onion
  • 4 cloves garlic

The finishing touches

  • 4 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil
  • to taste seasoned toasted seaweed snacks
  • to serve cooked rice

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the gochujang, soy sauce, bouillon paste, sugar, fish sauce, and water in a skillet.
  2. Slice the tofu and arrange it in the skillet with the onion, garlic, and some butter on top. Bring to a boil and cook until the sauce reduces.
  3. Remove from heat, add sesame oil and remaining butter, and stir until melted.
  4. Crush seaweed snacks and scatter over the tofu. Serve with rice.
