Ingredients

The scones

  • 3 tablespoons white granulated sugar
  • 1 unit blood orange, zested and juiced, divided
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, frozen
  • 1 cup buttermilk, plus more for brushing

The glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Juice from 1 unit blood orange

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sugar and blood orange zest, rubbing them together to release the zest's aroma.
  3. Whisk in the flour, poppy seeds, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Grate the frozen butter into the dry mixture and mix until it resembles pea-sized bits.
  5. Make a well in the center, pour in the buttermilk, and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  6. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface and shape it into a 1½-inch thick disc.
  7. Cut the dough into 6 equal triangles and place them on the baking sheet, then freeze for 15 minutes.
  8. Brush the tops with buttermilk and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown and a skewer comes out clean.
  9. While baking, prepare the glaze by whisking powdered sugar with blood orange juice until smooth.
