Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment.
- In a large bowl, combine the sugar and blood orange zest, rubbing them together to release the zest's aroma.
- Whisk in the flour, poppy seeds, baking soda, and salt.
- Grate the frozen butter into the dry mixture and mix until it resembles pea-sized bits.
- Make a well in the center, pour in the buttermilk, and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface and shape it into a 1½-inch thick disc.
- Cut the dough into 6 equal triangles and place them on the baking sheet, then freeze for 15 minutes.
- Brush the tops with buttermilk and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown and a skewer comes out clean.
- While baking, prepare the glaze by whisking powdered sugar with blood orange juice until smooth.
