Ingredients

The bread

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • cup vegetable oil
  • cup sour cream
  • cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest

The glaze

  • ½ cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, poppy seeds, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk the egg and sugar together, then mix in the oil, sour cream, milk, lemon juice, and lemon zest.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 50-60 minutes, covering with foil halfway through if needed.
  6. Check doneness with a toothpick; if it comes out clean, the bread is done.
  7. Cool the bread in the pan on a wire rack, then prepare the glaze by whisking together the confectioners’ sugar and lemon juice.
  8. Drizzle the glaze over the warm bread and allow to cool completely before slicing.
