Ingredients

The potatoes

  • 1 medium red potato, sliced 1/8-inch

The filling

  • ¼ cup sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup cooked ham
  • ½ tablespoon butter, diced
  • 2 tablespoons milk, half-and-half, or heavy cream

Seasoning

  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium saucepan, cover the sliced potatoes with cold water and add salt generously.
  3. Bring the water to a low boil and cook the potatoes for 3 to 5 minutes until just fork tender.
  4. Drain the potatoes and layer them in a baking dish with cheese, ham, and butter, seasoning each layer with salt and pepper.
  5. Finish with a final layer of cheese and ham, then pour milk or cream over the top.
  6. Place the dish on a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
