Ingredients

The cake

  • 1 and ¾ cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk

Chocolate batter

  • 2 and ½ tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk or buttermilk

Strawberry & Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 cup freeze-dried strawberries
  • 1 and ½ cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 6 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • to taste salt
  • as desired sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare three 6-inch cake pans.
  2. Make the vanilla batter by whisking flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda together, then cream the butter and sugar before adding eggs, sour cream, and vanilla.
  3. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the mixture until just combined.
  4. Prepare the chocolate batter by mixing cocoa powder, sugar, and milk into half of the vanilla batter.
  5. Layer the batters into the prepared cake pans and bake for 19-22 minutes.
  6. Cool the cakes completely before frosting.
  7. Make the frosting by processing freeze-dried strawberries into a powder and mixing it with butter, confectioners’ sugar, cream, and vanilla.
  8. Assemble the cake by layering the vanilla frosting between the cake layers and covering the outside with strawberry frosting.
  9. Decorate with sprinkles and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
