Steamed Bao

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. peanut or vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp. instant dry yeast
  • ½ cup lukewarm whole milk or oat milk
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • tsp. baking powder
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 5 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Grease a medium bowl and set aside.
  2. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water and mix with milk, sugar, and oil.
  3. Combine baking powder and flour in a stand mixer, then add yeast mixture and mix to form a dough.
  4. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, then let it rise until nearly doubled in size.
  5. Cut dough into 12 pieces, shape into balls, and flatten into disks.
  6. Roll each disk into an oval, brush with oil, and fold to form half-moons on parchment squares.
  7. Let the buns rise until almost doubled in size.
  8. Steam the buns until puffed and dry-looking.
  9. Cool the buns slightly before serving.
