Ingredients

The burgers

  • 2 medium shallots, minced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 15-ounce can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1-2 Tbsp avocado oil (plus more for cooking)
  • 1 4-ounce can mild green chilis
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 medium lime, juiced
  • 1 handful fresh cilantro, finely chopped (optional)
  • ½ cup finely crushed yellow corn tortilla chips
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • 2 tsp coconut or cane sugar (optional)

For serving/topping (optional)

  • to taste salsa or green chilis
  • to taste ripe avocado
  • to taste red onion
  • to taste cilantro
  • as needed buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. 1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) if baking.
  2. 2. Sauté shallots and garlic in oil until soft and translucent.
  3. 3. Combine sautéed garlic and shallots with chickpeas in a bowl and mash together, leaving some texture.
  4. 4. Add remaining ingredients to the bowl and mix until a moldable dough forms.
  5. 5. Divide mixture into 4 patties, packing them firmly.
  6. 6. Cook patties in the skillet for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned.
  7. 7. Optionally, transfer patties to a baking sheet and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes for a firmer texture.
  8. 8. Let cool for a few minutes before serving with desired toppings.
