Ingredients

Tempeh Bacon

  • 3 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce, tamari or liquid aminos
  • 2 teaspoons liquid smoke
  • 1 ½ tablespoons maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 8 ounces tempeh
  • 1 - 2 teaspoons coconut oil

Sandwich

  • 3 slices romaine lettuce
  • 1 large tomato
  • ½ tablespoon vegan mayonnaise
  • 2 - 3 slices tempeh bacon
  • 2 slices sourdough bread

Instructions

  1. Slice the tempeh thinly to help it crisp up.
  2. Steam the tempeh for about 10 minutes to remove bitterness and enhance flavor absorption.
  3. Mix liquid smoke, maple syrup, tamari, and smoked paprika in a bowl and marinate the steamed tempeh for 2 hours to overnight.
  4. Heat coconut oil in a pan and cook the marinated tempeh bacon for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned.
  5. Spread vegan mayonnaise on both slices of bread.
  6. Assemble the sandwich with bread, tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato, and top with another slice of bread.
