Old-Fashioned Chocolate Layer Cake

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease two 9-inch round cake pans with butter, dust with flour.
- In a heatproof bowl, combine the chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, and hot water over simmering water until melted and glossy.
- Set the chocolate mixture aside to cool.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- In a small bowl, combine the buttermilk and vanilla extract.
- In a stand mixer, whisk the eggs and yolks until combined, then add 1 ¼ cups of sugar and whisk until fluffy.
- Switch to a paddle attachment, add the cooled chocolate mixture and mix until incorporated.
- Add the softened butter gradually, mixing well after each addition.
- Alternate adding the dry flour mixture and the buttermilk mixture, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few crumbs.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for 15 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
