Salted Chocolate Bread Pudding

Ingredients

The bread and chocolate

  • 1 lb challah bread loaf
  • 14 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 8 tbsp butter

The custard

  • 4 cups evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • cup brown sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground turmeric

The finishing touches

  • 1 tsp finishing sea salt

Instructions

  1. Cut the challah bread into cubes and set aside.
  2. Melt the butter and 12 oz. of chocolate chips in a warm pot on low heat, then remove from heat.
  3. In a large bowl, combine evaporated milk, sugar, brown sugar, honey, vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric, and eggs, mixing until smooth.
  4. Combine the milk mixture with the melted chocolate until blended.
  5. In a casserole dish, add the bread cubes and sprinkle 1 oz. of chocolate chips in between the cubes.
  6. Pour the chocolate custard over the bread, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  7. Before baking, sprinkle the remaining 1 oz. of chocolate chips on top.
  8. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
  9. Sprinkle sea salt on top and allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
