Ingredients

The dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt

The mix-ins

  • 2 4-ounce semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate bars
  • 1 cup roughly chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter in a light-colored skillet over medium heat, stirring constantly until it has a nutty aroma and brown specks appear.
  2. Cool the browned butter for 5 minutes, then whisk in the brown sugar and granulated sugar, followed by the eggs and vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, then add the chopped chocolate and pecans, stirring until mixed.
  5. Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours to 3 days.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) towards the end of the chilling time.
  7. Scoop the dough into balls and place them on lined baking sheets, spaced 3 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 13-14 minutes or until the edges are set, then cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
