Ingredients

Butter Packet

  • 1 cup salted butter
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Dough

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon instant or active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 4 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

Cinnamon Sugar for Sprinkling

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 4 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare a parchment packet for the butter by folding the edges and creasing well.
  2. Whip the butter with sugar and cinnamon, then roll it into a thin sheet and chill until firm.
  3. Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl and let it sit until foamy.
  4. Add salt and flour, mixing to form a soft dough, then knead until smooth and let it rise until doubled.
  5. Roll the dough into a rectangle and place the chilled butter packet in the center.
  6. Fold the dough over the butter, sealing the edges, then roll it out into a long rectangle.
  7. Fold the dough in half and then fold the short edges to the center, repeating the folding process.
  8. Roll into a square and cut into strips, twisting each strip and placing them on a baking sheet.
  9. Let the twisted strips rise until puffy, then bake until golden brown.
  10. Brush any leaked butter over the tops and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar before serving.
