Ingredients

The crust

  • 1 recipe homemade pie crust (makes 2 crusts)

The filling

  • 3 large apples, cored, peeled, and sliced
  • cups fresh or frozen cranberries
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon fresh orange zest
  • teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 Tablespoon milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pie crust according to your recipe up to step 5.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the apples, cranberries, sugar, cornstarch, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).
  4. Roll out one disc of chilled pie dough and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.
  5. Fill the crust with the apple-cranberry mixture and dot with butter.
  6. Roll out the second disc of dough, cut into strips, and create a lattice top over the filling.
  7. Brush the top crust with egg wash.
  8. Bake the pie for 20 minutes at 400°F, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (177°C) and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes.
  9. Cool the pie for 3 hours before serving.
