Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease an 8x8-inch baking pan.
- Whisk together the dry ingredients in a medium bowl.
- In another bowl, mix the brown sugar, white sugar, and orange zest to release the oils.
- Add the neutral oil, egg, and molasses to the sugar mixture and mix until combined.
- Gently mix in the hot water.
- Fold in the dry ingredients until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for about 35 minutes.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a cooling rack.
- To make the frosting, brown the butter in a saucepan and let it cool.
- Beat the browned butter with cream cheese until smooth, then add powdered sugar, vanilla, salt, and heavy cream.
- Spread the frosting over the cooled cake.
