Ingredients

The French Toast

  • 6 large stale croissants
  • 1 8-ounce package cream cheese
  • 1 ¼ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 whole lemons
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons lemon extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk

For Serving

  • to taste strawberry sauce
  • to taste sliced fresh strawberries
  • to taste sweetened whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Slice the croissants in half lengthwise and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, mix cream cheese, zest and juice of one lemon, and ¾ cup powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Spread the cream cheese mixture on the bottom halves of the croissants and press the tops down.
  4. Arrange the croissants in a greased 9x13 inch pan.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, lemon extract, zest of the second lemon, and remaining ½ cup powdered sugar.
  6. Pour the egg mixture over the croissants and cover with foil, refrigerating overnight for 8-10 hours.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the covered pan for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, then cut into squares and serve with strawberry sauce, fresh strawberries, and whipped cream.
