Ingredients

The filling

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup onion (diced)
  • 1 rib celery (diced)
  • 1 medium carrot (peeled and diced)
  • 1 pound ground beef (grass-fed recommended)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • to taste pepper

The sauce

  • 1 can plain tomato sauce (15 ounce)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

For serving

  • as needed whole-wheat buns (toasted)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a sauté pan over medium heat.
  2. Add diced onion, celery, and carrot; cook until softened.
  3. Add ground beef and minced garlic; break up the meat while cooking.
  4. Season with salt and pepper; cook until the meat is browned.
  5. Drain excess fat from the pan.
  6. Stir in tomato sauce, honey, chili powder, vinegar, mustard, and cinnamon.
  7. Simmer over low heat until the sauce thickens, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  8. Serve warm on toasted whole-wheat buns.
