Ingredients

The chili

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 2 lbs ground turkey 93% lean
  • 1 unit onion, finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 28 ounce can diced tomatoes
  • 3 8 ounce cans tomato sauce
  • ¾ cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • teaspoons salt, divided use
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 2 15 ounce cans kidney beans, drained and rinsed

Toppings

  • assorted unit toppings such as sour cream and cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground turkey, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned.
  3. Add diced onion to the pan and cook until softened.
  4. Stir in minced garlic and cook briefly.
  5. Transfer the turkey mixture to a slow cooker.
  6. Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cocoa powder, sugar, and remaining salt.
  7. Stir to combine and cook on LOW for 6 hours.
  8. Add kidney beans and cook for an additional 20 minutes until warmed through.
  9. Serve with desired toppings.
