Sesame Tofu with Broccoli

Ingredients

The tofu and vegetables

  • 1 14-oz. block extra-firm tofu
  • 1 large head broccoli
  • 1 scallion scallion
  • 1 inch piece ginger
  • 1 clove garlic

The sauce

  • ¼ cup tamari or soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. light or dark brown sugar or pure maple syrup
  • 2 Tbsp. tahini
  • 2 Tbsp. unseasoned rice vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. toasted sesame oil
  • tsp. cornstarch
  • tsp. kosher salt
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ tsp. freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. toasted sesame seeds

The oil and additional ingredients

  • tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 Tbsp. grapeseed oil or vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup grapeseed oil or vegetable oil

For serving

  • to taste steamed white or brown rice

Instructions

  1. Drain and dry the tofu, then cut it into cubes.
  2. Cut the broccoli into small florets and prepare the scallion and ginger.
  3. Make the sauce by combining ginger, garlic, tamari, sugar, tahini, vinegar, sesame oil, cornstarch, salt, and water.
  4. Coat the tofu with salt and cornstarch.
  5. Cook the broccoli in oil until tender, then set aside.
  6. Fry the tofu in oil until golden brown.
  7. Prepare the sauce in the skillet, then add the broccoli and tofu to coat.
  8. Garnish with sesame seeds and scallions, and serve with rice.
