Spicy Garlicky Sesame Tofu

Ingredients

The tofu

  • 1 package super firm high-protein tofu (14-16 oz / 397-453 g)
  • 1 Tbsp olive or avocado oil
  • ¼ tsp sea salt

The sauce

  • 3 Tbsp maple syrup (or honey if not vegan)
  • 2 ½ Tbsp tamari or soy sauce (gluten-free as needed)
  • 4 tsp rice vinegar
  • 4 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 large cloves garlic, grated or pressed
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds

To thicken the sauce

  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp water

For serving (optional)

  • to taste thinly sliced green onions
  • to taste brown, white, or cauliflower rice
  • to taste steamed broccoli

Instructions

  1. Prepare rice or vegetables if serving with them.
  2. Preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Crumble the tofu into bite-sized pieces and toss with oil and salt on the baking sheet.
  4. Bake the tofu for 10 minutes, then flip and bake for another 10-15 minutes until golden and crispy.
  5. In a saucepan, combine maple syrup, tamari, rice vinegar, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and garlic. Simmer over medium heat.
  6. Mix cornstarch and water in a small bowl, then add to the simmering sauce and stir until thickened.
  7. Stir in sesame seeds and adjust the sauce to taste.
  8. Once the tofu is done, combine it with the sauce and serve warm with rice and vegetables.
