Crispy Sesame Garlic Tofu

Ingredients

Tofu & Marinade

  • 1 lb firm or extra firm tofu
  • ¼ cup gluten-free tamari soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons maple syrup
  • 1 clove garlic (finely grated)
  • 2 teaspoons avocado oil
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot starch
  • to taste ground black pepper

Sesame Garlic Sauce

  • ¼ cup gluten-free tamari soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons well-stirred tahini (or peanut butter/almond butter)
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 ½ teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 clove garlic (finely grated)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • extra for garnish sesame seeds

To Serve

  • warm cooked rice
  • steamed broccoli or other veg
  • sliced green onions or chopped cilantro

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for 15 minutes, then marinate it in a mixture of tamari, sesame oil, chili garlic sauce, rice wine vinegar, maple syrup, and garlic in a sealed bag for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  2. Thaw the tofu in the refrigerator for about 8 hours, flipping it occasionally.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Remove the tofu from the marinade, pat dry, and cut into 1-inch cubes.
  5. Toss the tofu cubes with avocado oil, arrowroot starch, and black pepper until coated.
  6. Arrange the tofu on the baking sheet and roast for 30-35 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  7. While the tofu roasts, prepare the sesame garlic sauce by combining tamari, maple syrup, tahini, lime juice, sesame oil, garlic, and sesame seeds in a jar and shaking to combine.
  8. Serve the hot tofu with rice, steamed vegetables, and drizzle the sesame garlic sauce on top.
