Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ stick unsalted butter, softened
  • cup sugar
  • tablespoons sugar (divided)
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup well-shaken buttermilk
  • cups chopped plums and nectarines (mixed)
  • to taste none Turbinado sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and prepare a 9-inch round cake pan by buttering and flouring it.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter and ⅔ cup of sugar until pale and fluffy, then mix in the vanilla and egg.
  4. Gradually mix in the flour mixture and buttermilk in three batches, starting and ending with the flour.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  6. Evenly scatter the chopped plums and nectarines over the batter, then sprinkle with the remaining sugar and optional Turbinado sugar.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool for an additional 10 to 15 minutes.
