Plum Nectarine Buttermilk Cake

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F and prepare a 9-inch round cake pan by buttering and flouring it.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter and ⅔ cup of sugar until pale and fluffy, then mix in the vanilla and egg.
- Gradually mix in the flour mixture and buttermilk in three batches, starting and ending with the flour.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
- Evenly scatter the chopped plums and nectarines over the batter, then sprinkle with the remaining sugar and optional Turbinado sugar.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool for an additional 10 to 15 minutes.
