Ingredients

The base

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium white onion, chopped
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • a pinch red pepper flakes
  • ½ pound 10% lean ground sirloin
  • ½ pound Italian sausage
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

The noodles and sauce

  • 9-10 traditional curly-edged lasagna noodles
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes with basil
  • 1 8-ounce can Italian tomato sauce with basil and oregano

The cheese

  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, divided
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ cup thinly sliced fresh basil

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add onion, garlic, and red pepper flakes; cook until onions are tender.
  3. Crumble in the ground beef and Italian sausage; add ½ teaspoon of kosher salt and cook until meat is fully cooked.
  4. Break lasagna noodles into 1-2 inch pieces and spread over the meat.
  5. Add water, crushed tomatoes, and tomato sauce; bring to a boil.
  6. Cover, reduce heat to a simmer, and cook for 20 minutes until noodles are al dente.
  7. In a bowl, combine ricotta, ½ cup Parmesan, ½ cup mozzarella, ½ teaspoon kosher salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper.
  8. Dollop the ricotta mixture over the cooked pasta and meat, then sprinkle with remaining cheeses.
  9. Cover and let sit for 4-5 minutes until cheeses melt.
  10. Top with fresh basil and serve.
