Ingredients

For the Blood Orange Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ blood orange juiced (about ¼ cup)

For the Blood Orange Smash

  • ¼ cup blood orange juice (about ½ blood orange)
  • 2 oz. bourbon
  • ½ oz. blood orange simple syrup (or to taste)
  • to taste none club soda (or seltzer water)

Instructions

  1. Make the blood orange simple syrup by combining water, sugar, and blood orange juice in a saucepan, bringing to a boil, then simmering until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat and let cool, then strain and store in an airtight container.
  3. In a highball glass, add blood orange juice, bourbon, and simple syrup; stir to combine.
  4. Fill the glass with ice and top with club soda to taste.
  5. Garnish with a slice of blood orange and serve immediately.
