Ingredients

Cupcakes

  • 1 and 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup yogurt
  • ¾ + 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened natural cocoa powder

Milk Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 and ¾ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened natural cocoa powder
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • to taste salt

Vanilla Frosting

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 and ¾ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • to taste salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  2. Mix together the dry ingredients for the cupcakes in a medium bowl and set aside.
  3. Melt the butter and whisk in the sugar, then chill briefly.
  4. Add the egg, yogurt, milk, and vanilla to the butter mixture and combine.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until smooth.
  6. Separate ¾ cup of the batter and mix in cocoa powder and a tablespoon of milk.
  7. Spoon the batters into the cupcake liners, alternating between vanilla and chocolate, and swirl if desired.
  8. Bake for 20-24 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean, then cool completely.
  9. Prepare the chocolate frosting by mixing the ingredients until creamy.
  10. Prepare the vanilla frosting similarly.
  11. Frost the cooled cupcakes with the prepared frostings.
