Ingredients

The cake

  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • cup buttermilk
  • 4 ounces bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate

The frosting

  • cups unsalted butter
  • cups confectioners’ sugar
  • ¾ cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Sift together the cake flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. In another bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy, then add granulated and brown sugars and mix until well combined.
  4. Add the eggs and egg yolks one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk, mixing until just combined.
  6. Set aside 1 cup of the yellow batter and mix in melted chocolate until combined.
  7. Pour yellow batter into the pans, add chocolate batter on top, and swirl with a knife.
  8. Bake for 22-27 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Let the cakes cool in the pans before transferring to a wire rack.
  10. For the frosting, beat the butter until smooth, then add confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, salt, vanilla, and cream, mixing until creamy.
  11. Level the cooled cakes if necessary, then frost between layers and on top and sides of the cake.
  12. Decorate as desired and serve.
