Ingredients

The sauce

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup onion, finely diced
  • ½ cup celery, finely diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 14½ ounces canned diced tomatoes
  • 8 ounces canned tomato sauce
  • 1 cup seafood or chicken broth
  • 1 leaf bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce

The shrimp

  • pounds medium to large shrimp

Garnishes

  • ¼ cup green onions, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

For serving

  • as needed steamed white rice

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion, bell pepper, and celery, cooking until tender.
  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  4. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  5. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato sauce, broth, bay leaf, salt, pepper, Cajun seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce.
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes until thickened.
  7. Add the shrimp and cook until they are pink and opaque.
  8. Stir in the green onions and parsley, garnish if desired, and serve over rice.
